Maison Marou - Review

Marou Chocolate was one of the first profiles and videos that we created to represent the vision of the new Vietnam. Started by two French entrepreneurs, the brand has taken off and now is the number one representation of Vietnamese chocolate in the market. Their chocolate bars are found all over the world with their signature colorful wrappings.

Recently the team behind Marou Chocolate opened a retail shop called Maison Marou that doubles up as a patisserie, bakery, retail shop, and mini-factory.

Why We Like It

If you’re seeking a cafe experience that is not typical cliche Ho Chi Minh City, head over to Maison Marou for a chocolate-infused option.

The prices are much higher than the average cafe, but the atmosphere, interior design, and aroma of the chocolate add to the heightened cafe experience that Maison Marou offers. The furniture steers away from the typical lower quality materials that are used in other places. The store is also separated to represent various parts of their bigger chocolate factory. You’ll find the roaster, the shelling, and grinding equipment. Everything the factory does, the shop on Calmette does too. The space is split into two: one half is making beans and the other half uses the chocolate to make the bars and pastries.

I never have any issues planting myself at the cafe for a few hours getting work done in the morning. The location, while central though not really walkable, is tucked away on the charming Calmette Street that reduces the main traffic noise. In the future, a main metro line will open right outside its doors. Right above the cafe is Cafe-Restaurant, a pricey upper-range Western-style restaurant that shares the restroom facilities with the cafe. It offers a decent lunch or dinner that can complement your Maison Marou experience.

Tips for a Great Experience

I would avoid the late morning or late afternoon rush. Given that this location is the flagship retail and cafe experience for the brand, you’ll often find busloads of tourists visiting as part of their itinerary in Ho Chi Minh City. I prefer coming here as early as I can for my morning cup of coffee. I end up working here for a couple of hours before heading out for my lunch.

The tables and window seats are ideal for working, with generous spacing and electric plugs. I would also recommend coming here for dessert after your dinner. The pastry options are a bit on the smaller portion size, but each brings its own kick of flavor that is hallmark to the chocolate brand. It’s a unique experience for out-of-towners who may have no impression of Vietnamese chocolate.
